Frequently Asked Questions

Knowing how to clean and care for your garments and household items is imperative to prolong the lifetime of each item. Here are a few tips to help you take the best care possible of your garments. Contact On The Spot Cleaners today.

Is It a Good Idea to Cut the Labels Out of My Clothing?

When buying a new garment, we recommend waiting to cut out the labels for at least 90 days. The Federal Trade Commission makes the manufacturer responsible for its care and construction if the garment is handled properly by the consumer. If the garment is labeled machine wash tumble dry and you properly care for the item at home (or we do it for you) and a problem appears (color bleeds, seam comes loose, etc.), you can return it within 90 days to the retailer for a refund or exchange. If all labels are intact, particularly the RN# (serial number), it makes this process easier. The same holds true for dry cleaning! Be aware that not all problems happen during the first wash or dry cleaning. Many are progressive problems, especially buttons. For your washable garments, we use special sprays and detergents which work better on stains and are easier on color.

Should I Attempt to Remove Spots and Stains at Home?

Don't do it! You can easily pull the color with home remedies and this includes plain water. Rubbing a spot even with water can set the stain and / or pull the color and make our job even harder. Protect your investment and let our experts take care of your spots and stains! We have the knowledge and the equipment to remove your stains safely. Today's dyes are solvent soluble or water soluble. You can very easily pull color from garment with home remedies.

What Should I Look for When Buying a Good Quality Comforter or Sleeping Bag?

When buying a new bedspread, comforter or sleeping bag, try to find one with lots of stitching throughout. This prevents the stuffing from balling-up inside and getting lumpy. Down comforters have tat which are sewn in squares. The most common size of tat is about 12-inch squares. It's best to look for the smallest squares you can find as this will help contain the feathers in a more compact space. The smaller the squares the fluffier and warmer your item will be. It will be more expensive but the quality is worth the price. The same principle applies to down jackets and coats.

Do's and Don'ts for Storing Your Clothes

  • For long term storage, it is recommended to store your garments in a cedar chest or cardboard box where air can circulate.
  • For even more protection, wrap items in acid-free tissue paper.
  • Do not store your clothes in the plastic bag from the cleaners. These are just dust covers and will trap moisture causing yellow spots and mildew. Remove the plastic bags as soon as you get home. Garments may be stored in breathable plastic or cloth garment bags with gussets.
